What to do in Mykonos ?

Often compared with Ibiza for its party, bohemian, and beach vibes, Mykonos is one of the most well-known little islands in the world.

But outside what you see on Instagram, what to do? I'll tell you here what I did during my four-day trip on the island, just before the high season.

Walk around the city of Chora

The known little city on the island is famous for its charming streets, flowers, and the red and blue details on the houses. You will love walking around and discovering every little boutique where you can find your first souvenirs to take with you on your way back. And if you read my last article, you know how much I love to walk in a city. You will also find many famous brands with a special beach collection (like Louis Vuitton, for example).

The city is also nice for a walk in the evening. And if you like to party, do not worry, many bars make themselves loud enough to let you know you can go!

If you are more into the chill vibes, you can still enjoy a drink during the day without the loud music at Little Venice, known for the terrace around the water. You will then also be able to have a view of the Windmills, which you probably already saw on the internet when typing Mykonos.

And of course, you will see cute cats, because this is not a cliché. They are cute, they are everywhere, and you cannot help yourself wanting to pet them (but be careful, these cats may be sick without you knowing; this is the sad reality behind the cats there, they belong to nobody, so maybe nobody takes really good care of them)!

Boat tour to Delos island

One of the other things we see less on social media is Delos Island. If you are a fan of Greek mythology, you have already heard of it. This island is known for being earlier the residency of Dionysos, also the place where Artemis and Apollo were born.

From the old port of Mykonos, you have the possibility to book a tour to this island with a guide or a self-guided tour (don't forget your headset for it).

You will then have a tour on the boat for 30 minutes to go there and come back. This is also the perfect way to have another view of Mykonos town and take great pictures. These boats are big enough and have open and closed spaces (in case of too warm or too windy weather).

Once you are there, enjoy your tour and the rest of Greek history. You will also walk a lot there, so don't forget your good shoes!

This tour is around 2 hours long, I would say. You can choose when to go back to Mykonos because they have two different schedules. You can see more on the official website here.

Taste the local food and drinks

Like many islands, Mykonos has a beautiful story, filled with lovely people who just love to share their passion with you. And their passion is producing their own olive oil, naturally salted olives, wines, breads, and last but not least, the feta. No, not that feta you just eat in your salad from the supermarket. The truly delicious feta.

The perfect way to taste these things is to book a tour given by the locals. I booked the tour in Myconian land, following a story of family work. They explain how they work and give you a taste of their wine and food afterward. Bonus: they also play traditional music while you are just enjoying being there, and it is amazing!

And if you want, you can try Kiki's Tavern, which is well-known on the island. They serve the best Greek salad and tzatziki. Also, try their chicken filled with tomato and feta; it's the best thing ever. With that, they can serve you the Mykonu, a local beer you can only drink there because it is not exported. As an added bonus, you will be eating with a pretty view of the blue water.

Enjoy the view from the lighthouse

This is the place to go if you want to see Mykonos like you would never expect. I don't even have a lot to say about it because this is the view that literally left me speechless.

Just go and appreciate being there, seeing the boats on the water looking so small and the blue of the water merging with the blue of the sky.

The lighthouse is not open anymore, so you can't go inside. Be careful because it doesn't have barriers. But if you want, bring your picnic with you; I saw a couple doing it, and I found it a good idea. Don't forget to throw away your papers and everything after (there is a bin there), or take it with you. You don't want to make that place look any less pretty.

Day at the beach

You can't go to Mykonos without going to the beach, right? With all the different views they offer, you have a lot of choices. But you can also find many of them full of other tourists or lined with lounge chairs that you have to pay a good price to rent for the day. So I asked a local, as simple as that. And I will never thank her enough for telling me about Agios Sostis, where you will find Kiki's Tavern I told you about here before. Here you will see no sunbeds, no big bars. Just the crystal-clear water, the warm sand, and a pretty view, because this is all you need, actually.

Shopping in Nammos Village

This one is more for the people with a good budget. Nammos, known for the luxury brands, has a real full makeover every year outside the high season, just so that you see their setup with some special collections from the biggest brands. Saint Laurent, Gucci, or even Jacquemus are there to be found. If you want to treat yourself, just go! Otherwise, just take beautiful pictures of that amazing decoration setup outside the Dior store, I loved it.

Day at the swimming pool of your hotel

A lot of hotels on the island have rooms with private pools or jacuzzis, or they have a big swimming pool for hotel guests almost everywhere. It's the perfect way to chill after shopping and walking. Most of the time, you can also just eat at your hotel's restaurant afterward, so you don't have to move.

Some of them also have a spa or treatments that you can enjoy in the best environment. This was the case at the hotel I chose; you can see more here.

How many days for a trip to Mykonos ?

My trip to Mykonos was 4-5 days long. I found it perfect to enjoy every moment and discover everything I wanted.

I would have booked just one more day to be able to take the time and see other beaches.

It always depends on your needs and what you like to do, of course. The motto stays the same: just enjoy every bit of it.

Now you know what to do outside the party on the famous island.

If this convinced you to go to Mykonos, stay tuned! In the next article, I will tell you more things you need to know before going.
